Contribution Rates

Why do the Special Service contribution rates change every year?
Every year IPERS’ actuary completes a valuation that looks at the characteristics of Special Service members joining and leaving IPERS, benefit changes, and the economic outlook. Contribution rates are adjusted based on the valuation. The small, yearly rate changes allow IPERS to respond quickly to rebalance the long-term funding for these members.

Who has the authority to change the contribution rates for regular members?
The legislature set the contribution rates for regular members through June 30, 2011. Beginning July 1, 2011, IPERS will set regular member contribution rates using an annual actuarial valuation, which is a snapshot of IPERS' finances.
