Statement about current market instability from IPERS CIO

March 9, 2020

IPERS Chief Investment Officer Karl C. Koch, CFA, says the investment markets are reacting to the uncertainty of how the coronavirus will impact the U.S. and global economies. The stock and credit markets have experienced sharp losses over the last three weeks, while high grade bonds are experiencing gains as investors flee to safety. We can expect a sustained period of volatility in the markets until some certainty is established.

These are trying times, but active IPERS members can take comfort in knowing that IPERS has a diversified investment portfolio that is managed with a long-term outlook. While these market losses are painful, we recognize that opportunities will also arise when the markets find clarity. Current pensioners can also take comfort that IPERS has plenty of liquid assets to continue paying monthly benefits for years to come.
