Michael L. Fitzgerald

Treasurer Fitzgerald was first elected to office in 1982, making him the longest-serving state treasurer in the country. He serves as custodian of Iowa’s three state pension funds and, in addition to sitting on the IPERS Investment Board, is a member of the board of trustees for the Iowa Peace Officers’ Retirement, Accident, and Disability System (PORS). As state treasurer, his responsibilities also include administering investments for PORS and the Judicial Retirement System and investing all state operating funds. Fitzgerald is active in national organizations that have an impact on issues in Iowa, including College Savings Plans Network (past chair); National Association of State Treasurers (past president); National Association of State Auditors, Comptrollers, and Treasurers (past president); and National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators (past president).
